Chapter Twelve

I wasn’t sure that anything was off with the Millers, exactly, but something continued to bother me about them. Why were they evasive about their reasons for being in Crystal Cove? Why were they fighting? And why had they shown up on the night when another murder occurred in our town?

Then I remembered that Frank had given them an alibi for the time of the murder, so even though I’d added them to my spreadsheet, I quickly crossed their names off and kept my questions about them to myself.

But later that night, Mr. Miller appeared in my dreams. I’d kept my sea glass necklace at my bedside, in hopes it might give me some insightful dreams, but this one seemed less important and more like I was just trying to merge all of my frustrations and questions into one compact dream.

In it, John Miller was one of my customers at the café. Actually, he seemed more like a buyer than a customer. As I brewed his coffee, he kept asking me, “How much for the place?” as he surveyed the café as though he was serious.

Then Julie appeared and murmured, “Let her have it. We can’t afford this.”

I woke up still feeling the tension from their argument the night before. After pulling myself out of bed and trying to put them out of my mind, I had just been getting ready to walk up to The Heirloom Café for my morning coffee when a knock came at my door.

“Oh, hi!” I said when I saw it was Jay. “I was just headed out for coffee. Do you want to join me?”

Jay looked past me into the houseboat. “Actually, could we talk here for a minute?”

Ever since I’d met the detective, he was forever looking for reasons to come aboard my aunt’s houseboat. Whether it had to do with my aunt’s wares—most of which had already been packed away—or my insightful cat, which I still hadn’t told him about fully, or about something else entirely, I wasn’t sure.

“Sure. Okay.” I opened the door wider. That was when I saw Mr. and Mrs. Miller heading off the wharf. Today they were hand in hand, clearly having solved any problems they’d had between them last night.

Jay came inside, and while he took a seat at the table and greeted Sherlock, I headed for the galley and my coffee maker. I didn’t process well before my first cup of the day, and if we weren’t going to The Heirloom, my home brew would have to do.

“Coffee?” I asked.

He shook his head. “I’ve already had three cups this morning. I’d better stop.”

I hadn’t yet dug into my cinnamon buns this morning, so I put those on a plate in the middle of the table. He didn’t hesitate to help himself. It was bittersweet, knowing I wouldn’t get to eat both, even though that was far more than I needed.

“To what do I owe this visit?” While Jay enjoyed coming aboard the houseboat, he had never dropped by without reason.
